I use the pda’s for the organizer feature and have had the data plan before and just don’t need it. I bought a new blackberry online and was told that I need to have a data plan to activate it. If i get it activated with the plan, then cancel the data plan, will the phone still work?

I love Verizon, but ’tis true. No data, no Blackberry. BlackBerry devices rely heavily on data. It’s no surprise they a data plan. The data they receive isn’t just to send/receive emails/web. It also monitors that security status of the device, allows for wireless upgrades of the Operating System, and lots more “behind the scenes”.
Also, a BlackBerry doesn’t use a “standard” data plan. They must have a specific “BlackBerry Data Plan” because BlackBerry has a proprietary method of transporting data over its own encrypted, secure servers (instead of over the open internet like normal data). This isn’t a Verizon only issue. This is across carriers.
